# Multi-signature and smart wallets

Smart-contract wallets and multisigs (e.g. Safe) can't produce ECDSA `personal_sign` signatures, so any step that needs your Ethereum private key works differently. Most features are still available:

| Action                    | EOA wallet      | Smart wallet / multisig                            |

| Register API key          | `personal_sign` | On-chain `changePubKey` (priority transaction)     |
| Trade with API key        | ✅               | ✅                                                  |
| Secure withdrawal         | ✅               | ✅ – the **only** way to withdraw funds off Lighter |
| Transfer to another owner | ✅               | ❌                                                  |
| Fast withdrawal           | ✅               | ❌                                                  |

## Registering an API key

In the front-end, you can still sign in by registering your API key with a priority transaction (i.e. using Ethereum's priority transactions). To do this, make sure to tick the box shown in the authentication modal. Under the hood, you're calling `changePubKey()` via Lighter's mainnet contract.

Through the API:

1. Generate a keypair (`GenerateAPIKey` in the [WASM signer](/developers/reference/wasm-signer.md), or the SDKs).
2. From the multisig, call `changePubKey` on the Lighter contract with the account index, API key index and public key. You can also use the [Ethereum gateway](https://app.lighter.xyz/ethereum-gateway/).
3. Once the priority transaction is processed, the key works like any other.

While you can change public key via priority transactions, you cannot perform a transfer that way. See [Priority Transactions](/developers/reference/priority-transactions.md) for everything you can do directly through the contract.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.lighter.xyz/developers/integration-guides/multi-signature-wallets.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
